skip to content menu home about me contact privacy policy -- inspiration from an unlikely place fashion deacon march 26, 2018 i am knee deep in the field of fashion fabric right now and you can bet that technology is fast changing the face of the field. no longer are designers limited to cotton, rayon, wool or silk. fabrics are truly high-tech and some don’t ever need cleaning. they can include metallic threads, textured surfaces and built-in gloss. there are waterproof and sun-proof textiles that protect wearers from the elements. it all comes down to how easy it is to work with the new breed of fabrics and the purpose of your output. it is not newness for its own sake but true innovation that suits an intensely active era where change is the order of the day. we expected a lot from the 21 st century and so far there are minimal changes in some fields like home exterior design—but it is happening. the world is changing daily and technology and innovation are affecting all areas of our lives. we want to see more. think of your humble kitchen faucet. they are now touchless and pull down and come with assorted bells and whistles like instant hot or filtered water. most importantly, the designs are cutting edge and a glory to behold. they work in any context. i love the graceful curve of a slender faucet, unmatched except by an elegant knob. as entrenched as modernization is in home or clothing design, there are times when you feel a need for contrast. so you go retro. it’s a hot trend. antique styling is back in kitchen faucets , electric mixers, dinnerware and stoves. i was made aware of this fact when i was visiting a friend in the middle of restoration. i love his new look, especially the antique touches. the farm sink is so in, whether your cabinets are sleek or not. he was torn, he said, between this classic and an antique metal sink. this trend reminds me of the passion for claw foot tubs in bathrooms a while ago. you can choose from many finishes including pewter and brass. as long as the faucet is retro, the whole décor works. you can be eclectic and mix in whatever streamlined items you want. after all, streamlined cars were the obsession of the early 20 th century. building facades were curved and rhythmic. i say everything goes now, and it is certainly true in fashion. in every way, the old is new again. the designer in me wanted to add my touch to his renovation, but i am not an expert at appliances like fridges or dishwashers. but i am conversant with all styles from traditional and classic to antique retro. so, i couldn’t resist designing for a pin for his girlfriend using the same lines as the new faucet. they say that artists draw inspiration from anywhere and i am here to confirm this belief. imagine getting excited about the look of an antique style faucet. odd runway show tonight fashion deacon october 19, 2017 i am happy to offer my skills to charity. i feel that it is important for all of us, no matter our profession, to give back. recently, i was asked to participate in a fashion show fundraiser and jumped at the chance. i don’t have such opportunities very often. i shouldn’t have gotten myself so excited because it was not what i expected. i thought it would be a classy event that focused on the fun of modern fashion with a bit of techno fabric thrown in. as you might know, this is my forte. instead, it had an outdoor runway and the guests were paying more attention to the kegerator (they look like this ) than the clothes. as a whole, looking at the event from expert eyes, the runway aspect was well organized and came off without a hitch. however, i was not impressed with the surroundings. i would have preferred another venue. as for the kegerator, why on earth was it there? i would have opted for chilled bottles of wine or even champagne. it brought the entire experience down to a low level. i can’t imagine who made this decision. next time i will ask more questions or even offer to run the event myself. i have been to enough of these shows to know the ropes although i am not an expert coordinator. in this case, i would have outdone the “professional” hired. my dog could have done better. ha! you want to offer refreshments but they should not be equivalent to a college keg party. have you ever smelled stale beer? while i like beer as a refreshing drink, i would not serve it in a keg on a serve yourself basis. it would have been fine if the fundraiser had been a tasting party. then it would have made sense and guests would be appropriately talking about the various lagers and ales and it would make for some great facebook moments. maybe the hosts did not invite the right crowd, one who would enjoy fashion. you want to put people in the right spirit to make a donation, but if they are not into the clothes, they are unlikely to become motivated. at best this crowd would have run off to the local liquor store. they had the right idea with attractive professional models who looked great and walked the runway with ease. there was some light music that didn’t detract. i was most grateful for everything that had been done correctly. i wish there had been flowers or other festive adornment. paper beer cups were all that was displayed and these were not even stacked in a nice orderly fashion. the cocktail napkins showed the logo of the beer provider. free publicity! it was a horror. the models did not remain to mingle with the tipsy guests and i didn’t blame them. let’s give a rousing cheer to fashion and the creative geniuses who make it. let’s boo the coordinators of this ridiculous fundraiser and hope they have learned their lesson. making your business bag investment last fashion deacon august 8, 2017 technology has brought us every conceivable machine for manufacturing since the industrial revolution. it has enabled us to fly at immense speeds, take bullet trains, drive automobiles by computer, speak to people in other countries without a long-distance operator, and now research anything we like with the click of a mouse. gone are transistor radios, dial phones, cathode ray tubes, ice boxes, foot pedal sewing machines, steam engines, and newspapers. poof and we no longer see turntables (except that i hear they are making a nostalgic comeback), blackboards, ink-filled pens, boom boxes, and crank ice cream makers. it has resulted in better housing with central air and heating, and modern plumbing and fixtures. there is nothing it hasn’t touched. we can split an atom, build a car with a robot, produce drugs beyond belief, and look at the person at the other end of the telephone line while we are talking thanks to face time. i love the way technological advancement has changed the clothing industry which has evolved right along with the new techno fabrics. things last longer than they used to due to newfound durability and tensile strength. anything made of fabric has seen this advantage. take backpacks and bags. the materials are sturdy and resilient no matter what the weather conditions. they are heat resistant and waterproof as well as washable and self-drying. while a good business bag costs a pretty penny, it should last the duration of your career. knowing a lot about fabrics and how they can be cared for and mended, i know that a good back is a very worthwhile investment. take a little time now and then and attend to the condition of your bag. it may need polishing or oiling if it is leather, or dry cleaning if it is traditional fabric. read the instructions that come with your item or follow the basic guidelines here . everything you need to know is under the section labeled “special care.” if in doubt, speak to the manufacturer on facebook . most bags can be mended by a shoe and handbag repair service. some interesting fabrics these days are coated with a special finish, especially for children’s merchandise. they feel like plastic but they are much better in fact. this same material is used for rainwear and totes. it gives a very modern and updated look to fashion. i don’t much care for an entire outfit made of it, but perhaps a skirt or belt. most of the time, technology means synthetic materials used in creative ways to substitute for cotton, silk, and wool. they are resistant to insects, particularly those destructive moths. new fabrics can be wrinkle free, saving you considerable time ironing. they pass the test of school children who don’t give a hoot about protecting their clothing. those in the fashion industry keep their eye on trends, especially in fabrics. many are using computerized systems to create and execute modern designs. watch out. a new fad may be within your grasp. running with it may reap you good fortune. design challenge fashion deacon july 12, 2017 the big lug was sitting out, left carelessly by my roommate. it sat idly wondering where everyone had gone. it was an annoying presence, reminding me of a chore that had to be done. it stood upright at attention with its would up cord creating a diversion. “unwind me,” it called out. “vroom. vroom,” it roared, mocking me clearly. it was no racecar that offered at least some fun. this is a utilitarian being with a big, fat belly. the thick patterned fabric was hiding a bag inside, full of unhealthy dust. i should have opted for a bagless version, but frankly, where does the dirt go? it is a mystery to me. this guy facing me with derision was an old timer when things were less advanced. he needs a dose of technology. i paid no attention and went about my business watching tv when all of a sudden, i turned to the lifetime channel that features fashion competitions. you know the kind. they have won emmys. after a few minutes, i realized what constituted the participants’ immediate challenge. they had to use industrial materials in a repurposed way. some got really creative. the best was a dress made of a vacuum cleaner bag and the hose from a bagless model like the ones here . he told the audience that he had got them for free from a junk store. it was a very thoughtful commentary on not only the trendy and inventive fashion world, but also the state of modern technology. the designer was being practical by using existing items that can be found everywhere in our surroundings. it makes a statement about recycling as much as about the shock value of new “fabrics.” even though he didn’t win the popular vote on facebook , he was the true winner in my eyes. the show must have a motto that fashion can be fun. i admire people who don’t take their craft too seriously and insist on one way of doing things. the designers didn’t mind modifying their usual approach that shows off more skill. this kind of project requires more ingenuity. you don’t have to demonstrate your ability to do scrunching or pleating. your end-result doesn’t have to scream elegance and style. all that is expected on such a tv show is the willingness to experiment and explore while following the rules. each contestant must meet the demands of the challenge and exceed it. you don’t expect the dress to actually be wearable or saleable. it should, however, show imagination and hutzpah. it should also get a second look. most of the time the judges hate these silly exercises, but they comment none the less as if they were real fashion. who knew that machines like my friendly vacuum at home would be useful for another purpose. he is shaking as he watches the tv with me. he doesn’t want to end up being torn apart and fashioned into a ridiculous female garment. it is not in his belief system. let me do my thing and clean the floors, he moans. splurge vs save fashion deacon june 2, 2017 anyone in the fashion industry has the word “trendy” on their lips most of the time. if they aren’t looking at innovation, they are in the wrong business. if you aren’t up to date and new, you are old hat and likely to be ignored. this is the kiss of death for a designer. every aspect of the field is touched by a passion for the new from clothing and shoes to accessories and jewelry. it makes for a lot of daily excitement as the news reports everything that appears for the first time on the web. the fashion bloggers and critics went crazy when some new basketball shoes recently came out for kids. they are huge consumers and if something goes viral, it means good times ahead for the industry. kids are fickle and will change brands if others are buying them. i like to hear success stories. i also like knowing that prices are dropping in areas where they had been skyrocketing. usually, if you buy what is hot, it costs an arm and a leg. this is really true of stylish, well-made sports shoes. i have looked in the past for reasonable sneakers at no more than a fair price. like everyone else, you want what the top players are wearing, but you can’t always afford them. if they attach their name to a brand, it spells profits. but it you can get a pretty good shoe under one hundred dollars from an off brand, why not go for it. why are you emptying your pockets for fads? i know for a fact that cheaper shoes can be just as good as the expensive kind whether you wear them for fun and fashion or on the playground at the park. there is a time to splurge, and a time to save. the basketball shoes for under $100 that you can buy from here can last just as long and they are made of similar materials. sometimes the copy is identical to the high-priced version. there isn’t always a fall-off in quality. some kids don’t realize that they often pay through the nose for over-built shoes that have too much detail that doesn’t impact functionality. for some, the design is worth it just as it matters for leather jackets. when did the fashion world go nuts? you see it in designer handbags that sell for thousands but include about $100 of leather and lining. when you buy practical things like basketball shoes, you have a list of priorities including fit, comfort, ease of use (putting them on and taking them off), appearance, waterproofing, and style. if you can get all this for under $100, you have found the perfect solution. you can be in fashion and save money all at the same time. i love the idea that you can buy two pairs for the price of one. i am a frugal sort, hence my interest in promoting personal economy in the blog. take my advice and you won’t be disappointed in your new athletic shoes. dazzle up your wardrobe fashion deacon may 28, 2017 hi everyone! get out your welders as i am about to give you some tips for your dull personal wardrobe. yes, believe it, a welder can produce all kinds of fabulous things. i know; i am a designer that lives on the cutting edge. i use every technique out there in design land to make things to wear and sell. i will try something as unusual as welding if it results in a new creation. there is so much on the market that you have to wrack your brain to be original and catch the attention of buyers these days which is what led me to a facebook page where they share ideas of interesting things to make with a welder. there are no universal standards any more, and just about anything goes. if you want a new look that will raise heads, get out that construction device. you can rent or borrow them in different sizes and i suggest going small. the first idea i have is to make metal buttons to jazz up a denim jacket or jeans. if you want a heavy-duty item, you can weld an existing round object to a metal base. you can buy these bases at jewelry supply stores. buttons are the simplest and most eye-catching way to embellish clothing. there is no limit to the style. you can have a polished top or an etched design—just use your imagination. a plus is that buttons are easy to sell. with your mini welder, you can join silver pieces, making them into a triangle, before putting them on the tips of a collar. it is best to do this to a heavier type of fabric like cotton chambray or denim. they would be too heavy for voile or silk. you can get thin silver however if you prefer. i also like to make link chains that i can cut to size and drape across a piece of clothing. it looks great hanging from a pocket on pants or on the bottom of a simple top to make it more festive. you don’t weld things to your attire, but you make things with which to decorate their surfaces. metal is all the rage on handbags and shoes, and of course is a staple of jewelry making. you can glue it, weld it, bend it, transform it, and come up with something innovative and unique. at a crafts fair, i like to populate my exhibit table with a variety of hand-made items. people love anything not machine made, especially if it has a story to tell. goods are so identical with all the chain stores in the malls and on line. bring your welder and give a demonstration of your craft. customers will flock around. they will purchase something interesting if they can get to know you first. this provides them with information to relate to people who admire your handiwork. remember that it takes time to learn how to weld and develop skills. practice makes perfect. stay clean fabrics? fashion deacon april 16, 2017 i am in an industry that benefits from advanced technology. i want my clothing designs to be as cutting edge as my methodology. a lot of my attention is given these days to fabrics as they are constantly changing and reflect some pretty genius innovations. i fancy myself a bit of an inventor, too, so i might try my hand at a new kind of material that is durable and versatile but still elegant and attractive. i might start a new trend. there is nothing better than being at the top of your game. fashion and design is so competitive and it is hard to beat the competition, especially those companies with ample funding. while design is my forte, you will also find me in my shop wielding tools like electric sanders and jigsaws. i love working with my hands. i can create decorative objects and wall art, picture frames, wooden boxes for jewelry, and knickknack shelves galore. i could get into necklaces and earrings if i want to go small scale. i am constantly experimenting to satisfy that inventor in my soul. i work on my clothing designs in the same space as all this woodworking. as you can imagine, there are small particles of dust and wood shavings everywhere. even when i use the best jigsaws , i create atmospheric pollution. this got me thinking about the kind of stuff that is in the air in most urban centers. if any construction is going on, you can bet that people get blasted by dust every day. it takes a toll on your clothing. you must spend loads of money on dry cleaning. thinking about this unique problem, i hit the nail on the head for my next invention. it will be “stay clean” fabrics that repel the floating debris of city life. i could make shop aprons out of it at first to test the market. surely the ubiquitous do-it-yourselfers will value its futuristic nature. no one washes their shop apron anyway, so a repellent fabric would allow it to last for months at a crack. then i would tackle the fashion market, appealing to people who live in dusty areas such as the midwest and the desert. it is akin to clothing fabric that shields the wearer from the sun. this has been accomplished, so why not go the extra mile and add stay clean properties to the mix. what do you think? is this ridiculous or supremely helpful to humanity? it is not easy to invent a new fabric and i know it will take time. i must research materials and their cost. what if i come up with the perfect solution, but the fabric ends up costing an arm and a leg? that is not a good outcome. i need resources that are not only sustainable, but also cost effective. they weave fabric in many parts of the world such as southeast asia, china, and japan. labor would be prohibitive in japan, so i am crossing that one off my list. i am narrowing it down and will start to buy samples for testing. i will let you know of my progress. fabrics on demand fashion deacon april 12, 2017 3d printers are great and people are excited about them, but we’re really only scratching the surface of their capabilities. these kinds of printers are already sneaking up on people. they’re having a hard time imagining a world where people really use them and they’re not just the sort of science fiction gadgets that are sort of available but not really. they really are here, they really are available, and people really can use them for lots of things even today. before much longer, among other things, we’ll have fabrics on demand. it’s possible that many of the clothing stores of the future will involve people buying patterns for the clothes that they want to print online and then sending the information to their 3d printers, at which point the clothes will be printed out right in front of them in their own homes. some people might want to print out fabrics in the same way, and they’ll partly make their own clothes. however, they’re still going to be the ones who seemingly control the production of the clothes, or that is how it is going to seem to the people who are used to buying clothes in a store. people who get fabrics on demand are going to be able to wear what they want when they want it. they’ll truly have the opportunity to change their styles easily. they won’t have to wait for their new clothes to arrive in the mail since their clothes are going to be there for the printing right away. shipping and handling costs will go out the window as a result, and the environmental implications of no longer having to ship clothes around the country as much are staggering. 3d printing technology is going to give people the opportunity to truly have the freedom that they’ve always wanted over their clothes, and that’s how it’s going to be for the people of the near future. it’s going to be weird printing out clothes the way you print out documents. then again, printing out documents in your living room used to be weird too, and it’s one of the most banal things that we do in a regular day now. printing out a new business suit in time for the big meeting is going to be a thing, and people can talk about how they were late because something went wrong when they were trying to print out their suits. it’s the kind of futuristic problem that you expect people to have, sort of like a superhero problem. problems that are caused by additional capabilities are good ones to have. tech shirts of the future fashion deacon march 12, 2017 tech shirts of the future are really going to be tech shirts of the future. they’re going to be tech shirts in a very real way. people will have the technology in these shirts to charge their phones and other devices if necessary. they can just plug in their phones, and that’s that. people aren’t going to have to hunt around for chargers in most cases. they’ll just be wearing their chargers on their person from then on, and they’ll truly feel like the citizens of the future as a result. tech shirts of the future can also potentially be smart devices. having smart devices embedded into one’s clothes can really ensure that people aren’t going to lose anything. they’ll have everything that they need right at their disposal. people love having their smartphones close by at all times. when they can actually wear their smartphones, it’s going to completely transform those smartphones yet again. more to that point, medical and health monitoring is going to be more of a possibility in the future. people aren’t going to have to go to the doctors in order to get it done. they’ll be able to use the capabilities of telemedicine in order to make it happen, and medical and health monitoring devices will be embedded into a person’s clothing in order to really make the transition that much easier for everyone involved. since these are devices that people are wearing all the time, it’s going to be that much easier for the devices to work in the first place. people also are not going to have to remember to plug them in or use them regularly: they’ll be getting data all the time. this sort of health monitoring equipment is better on a lot of different levels. people will be able to get a more accurate reading of the state of their health since they will get multiple readings over the course of a given day rather than a single reading during one test at a health clinic. lots of the medical information that people get today is biased in that regard. people of the near future are finally going to be able to get the information that they really need about their health. they’ll also be able to get it while they’re wearing some of their favorite clothes. space-age shoes fashion deacon february 26, 2017 space-age shoes somehow sound more futuristic than a lot of other types of futuristic clothing, even though they’re going to come out around the same time as them. this is partly a function of the fact that space age shoes just seem to be products of the science fiction of the mid-twentieth century. we’ve wanted the shoes that are going to help us bounce high throughout the neighborhood in a way that is going to make us all feel like we have super powers. the space age shoes aren’t going to be able to do that in all likelihood, although you never know. they’re not going to be able to help people fly. however, they will at least make it easier for people to keep track of the number of steps that they’ve taken throughout the day. the steps that people have taken throughout the day are crucial to their overall fitness, and that’s going to make a difference in a person’s long-term health. space-age shoes can make it easier for people to keep track of their steps. some space age shoes might just be better for foot health in general. people are used to wearing shoes that are terrible for their foot health in more ways than one. high heels slowly but surely destroy the feet by pulling the entire body out of alignment. shoes that are too low are bad for the arches. the space age shoes of the future will strike the balance that people will need in order to avoid all of the problems that people associate with the shoes of today. the future of eveningwear fashion deacon february 19, 2017 eveningwear is what most of us wear in order to feel stylish for a night on the town, and it might get stylish in a completely different way in the future. we’ve all had the experience of spilling something on a nice suit, dress, or other great and expensive piece of evening wear. in the future, people will be able to change the color of their eveningwear, and that isn’t going to be as much of a problem. the prototypes for this sort of thing are already in development. the clothes will be designed with this technology and there will be an app for it. if you spill some wine on your dress, you can change it to a burgundy one with an app. if your suit is the wrong color, you can change it just as easily with the activation of a simple app. this sort of advance is going to create a situation in which people basically have several items of clothing all at once. a dress is several dresses if it changes color. you can cut some of your shopping needs in half as long as you’re able to get more use out of your dresses and suits in that manner. naturally, a lot of the new eveningwear of the future is going to be made from the same fabric that repels bacteria. not only are your clothes going to be cleaner as a result, but they’re also not going to be as fragrant in the worst way. evening wear is held to excessively high standards when it comes to cleanliness, and the microfibers of the future are going to be able to meet those standards at last. online shopping is making shopping in stores less of a pastime these days. people aren’t going to the mall in order to hang out and shop as often these days. they just get what they need online. shopping malls are becoming collections of places like bowling alleys and arcades. the future of eveningwear is only going to continue to end the future of shopping malls. the thing is, evening wear probably isn’t going to look that different. we might expect that the cool and futuristic evening wear of the future is going to look as futuristic as people might think that it is. that probably isn’t going to happen, though. clothes have looked pretty much the same for most of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. they’re probably going to continue to look the same. a time traveler from a hundred years ago might barely recognize how this futuristic little black dress is so different from a little black dress that she might have worn. however, this is a little black dress that can become a blue one and that is never going to pick up deadly bacteria, and that’s more futuristic than a little black dress with a slightly different shape. forward thinking outerwear fashion deacon february 12, 2017 lots of people are thinking about the future of fashion these days, and this has been popular for decades now. in a lot of the old speculations about the future that people will find from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, people seemed to still believe that humanity would wear the fashions of the day a hundred years hence. while people often made that same mistake in the science fiction of the mid-twentieth century and later, people at least made more of an effort to imagine the fashion of the future. what did they imagine? i guess a lot of people fifty years ago didn’t think that we would all be dressing like the young people of their day. in the 1960’s, jeans were a ‘young person’s’ clothing item. today, people ranging from two years old to ninety-two years old and older wear jeans. wearing suits and dresses everywhere was common back in the 1960’s and 1950’s and started to disappear around the 1970’s. that’s one of the modern world’s contributions to the world of clothing: we’re very casual about it in a way that would have been odd at different points in time. our idea of fancy clothing has changed with time. i would say that our idea of fancy clothing and clothing, in general, will change. when it comes to the shape and cut of the clothes, it is really hard to say. in the 2010’s, tight, form-fitting jeans are popular, leggings are popular, long shirts or crop tops, and scarves and dusters are all popular. many of these clothing items were previously popular in different eras, and they have all made it into the same era today. as recently as twenty years ago, jeans with baggier legs, higher waists, and lighter coloring were all more popular, and they’re regarded as jeans for older people today. shoulder pads were massively popular in the 1980’s and into the 1990’s and they’re regarded as laughable relics now. the people of the 1980’s, who loved pastels, would have considered the dark colors and monochromatic coloring of today’s wardrobe melancholic. this is just the late twentieth century as well: going back even further in time would leave the people of the past progressively more confused. it’s hard to predict how outerwear and innerwear will change since fashion trends are somewhat arbitrary. the 1980’s fashion trends actually were products of the resurgence of consumer culture in the day. the 1990’s fashion trends were largely characterized by a backlash against the 1980’s. still, fashion does not perfectly reflect all of these economic and social changes, which people should recognize. as such, predicting the future of the mid-twenty-first century is tough from an aesthetic standpoint. however, there are certain things that people can expect: outerwear and fashion will be affected by technology. so far, the narrative of the twenty-first century is basically a record of all of the different ways in which mobile technology, social media, and the internet have changed our lives. almost everything that people do today is an effect of the fact that we live in the information age and the world of mass human connection where everyone is connected. this has an effect on all we do, and it is going to have an effect on our clothes. one of the big things about the clothes of the near future, in all likelihood, is that they are going to be more resistant to contamination. they’re going to be made of materials that retain bacteria less effectively, so they will stay clean more easily. they’re also not going to be as odorous as a result, even after you wear them for a long period of time. they’re not going to have to be treated with chemicals to achieve this effect: you design the fabric in a certain way, and you create a surface that is not even favorable for the bacteria. people will stay cleaner and healthier this way, and the bacteria-repellent outerwear of the future is going to be more pleasant for all of us. of course, one of the most important parts of outerwear is temperature control. we’ve all worn a jacket that wasn’t warm enough even if we tried to make it warm enough, and now we’ll really be able to do so. outerwear that is temperature-controlled is going to be available, and that will give people the opportunity to really stay comfortable. heated car seats use the same basic technology, and that is what people will be able to use in order to control the temperature of their jackets. we’ll be able to cool them down, heat them up, and get them in line with our own shifts in temperature all at the same time. wearable technology was something that futurists of the 1990’s were talking about all the time. they actually weren’t wrong about it from a technical perspective: we have a lot of the technology now. they were just wrong from a cultural perspective. it isn’t here yet. it will be, and there are lots of implications for technology
